The Hungarian Elites of the Pre-State Period in the Light of Narrative Sources of the 9th and 10th Centuries
The period from the mid-9th to the mid-10th century is the period of migration of the Magyars and other peoples joined and allied with them (who later became Hungarians together with the Magyars), their settlement in the Pannonian Basin and intensive expansion towards Western Europe and Byzantium. It is therefore a rare phenomenon amongst nomadic societies that such a conglomerate of diverse peoples and religions does not fall apart but forms a state with a long existence. In the process of migration, and the cessation of nomadism and settlement, the elites of these groups played a permanently decisive role. From the point of view of this paper, fortunately, we can find shorter or more detailed accounts of the elites of the Hungarians in narrative sources written in Arabic, Greek and Latin. Based on these sources, we can get a picture of the different paths these elites chose to survive in this period of intensive change and which of these paths proved effective and which did not.
